{"value"=>"<p>Choreographer and dancer. Born in Joliet, Illinois, Dunham received her Ph.D. at Northwestern University in anthropology, and she is considered a pioneer in the field of dance. She formed the Katherine Dunham School of Cultural Arts in 1943, and was the producer and director of the Katherine Dunham Dance Company in 1945. Dunham is identified as a dance pioneer due to her development of the Dunham technique, which combines Caribbean dance with jazz, ballet, and modern dance. She appeared in many films and plays, and choreographed dances for such films as <span class=\"title\">Stormy Weather</span> and <span class=\"title\">Cabin in the Sky</span>.</p>"}
