Before her marriage to composer Cecil Mack in 1909, Curtis was an accomplished pianist and was the first black woman to practice dentistry in New York City. Curtis traveled to Europe with Mack and his Blackbirds Choir in Lew Leslie's <span class=\"title\">Blackbirds of 1930</span>, which starred Ethel Waters and Flournoy Miller. When the choir returned to the U.S., she replaced Mack as the choir director. After Mack's death, she married dancer Ulysses \"Slow Kid\" Thompson in 1948.</p>"}
