{"value"=>"<p>Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, Browne became one of the most recognizable actors in television and film in the 1960s and 1970s. Browne attended Lincoln University, where he also taught literature and French. He was a member of several theatre companies over the years including Long Wharf Theatre, Pittsburgh Playhouse, and American Conservatory Theatre. His film credits include <span class=\"title\">Superfly</span>, <span class=\"title\">Black Like Me</span>, <span class=\"title\">Jumpin' Jack Flash</span>, and <span class=\"title\">Babe</span>, for which he was the narrator. Browne won numerous awards, among them an Obie Award for best actor (with Frank Langella and Lester Rawlins) in 1965 for <span class=\"title\">Benito Cereno</span> and a Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for best actor in 1970 for <span class=\"title\">The Dream on Monkey Mountain</span>. He also earned an Emmy Award (with others) for outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role in a comedy or drama series for <span class=\"title\">Barney Miller</span> (1975), and an Emmy Award for outstanding guest performer in a comedy series for <span class=\"title\">The Cosby Show</span> (1986). Browne was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1977.</p>"}
