He taught at Howard University, and he was a poet and critic of black literature. Brown's books, <span class=\"title\">The Negro in American Fiction</span> and <span class=\"title\">Negro Poetry and Drama</span>, both published in 1937, are considered classics, the first in-depth studies of representations of blacks in American literature. He was an influential teacher and encouraged many African-American writers.</p>"}
