{"value"=>"<p>This subseries consists of a chronological file of Cockran's correspondence as associate counsel for Thomas J. Mooney who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by a California court for a bombing incident which took place during a patriotic parade in San Francisco in July of 1916. Included is correspondence with Thomas J. Mooney, Maxwell McNutt, chief counsel for Mooney, Warren Billings (who was also indicted in the incident and who was sentenced to life imprisonment), Samuel Gompers, John G. Lawlor, Frank L. Mulholland, E. D. Nolan, and with members of the International Workers' Defense League including Alexander Berkman, Robert Minor and Anna M. Sloan. Included are files of collateral and miscellaneous papers including affidavits, typescripts of briefs and petitions, a statement of the prosecution opposing Mooney's application for executive pardon, speeches by Cockran relating to the case, press clippings, and a printed brief which Cockran submitted to the commissioners appointed by the President to investigate the circumstances of Mooney's conviction.</p>"}
