{"value"=>"
In 1953, Merle Debuskey, a friend of Joseph Papp (then Papirofsky), volunteered to do publicity, free of charge, for Papp's An Evening of O'Casey. When Papp formed the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1954, Debuskey became its first press representative, working from an office outside the New York Shakespeare Festival. In the 1970s a Press Office was formed internally, headed by Richard Kornberg. Debuskey continued to work as the General Press Representative until 1985. Separate departments were formed in the Press Office to handle special programs, such as NYSF at Lincoln Center and the Festival Latino en Nueva York.

The Press Office was responsible for promoting the New York Shakespeare Festival, its staff, and their activities. The Office gathered and disseminated information about productions, special events and other activities conducted by the New York Shakespeare Festival and prepared that information for publication.

The Press Office wrote press releases announcing productions and general activities of the Festival (such as fundraising activities). They coordinated the invitation and seating of drama critics for press openings, as well as special guests for opening night performances. The Office prepared biographical notes about the production staff for playbills. They oversaw billing of NYSF staff on marquees and advertisements, and selected images of actors (head shots) for publication in programs and for press announcements of upcoming productions. They also prepared captioning for production stills and for special events to release to the press. In addition, the Press Office was responsible for arranging interviews (publicity appointments) between production staff and the mass media.
"}
