{"value"=>"<p>The general correspondence consists of a chronological file followed by correspondence arranged by name of correspondent.</p> <p>The chronological file consists mainly of letters received by Cockran (with a few carbon copies of replies) from lawyers, politicians, friends, colleagues and others relating to his New York City law practice, and to public affairs. Included are letters relating to municipal politics, Tammany Hall and Democratic Party politics, the mayoralty campaign of 1901, Cockran's election to Congress, the presidential elections of 1896, 1912 and 1916, and various other matters including anti-imperialism, immigration, the Irish Question, Boer War relief, the Negro Question in the South, repeal of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, the minimum wage, the European War (World War I), and Catholic Church affairs. There is also correspondence relating to Cockran's speaking engagements, his exceptional oratorical gifts, and his personal investments. Included in the later period is correspondence between Cockran in Washington, D.C. and his secretary, Margaret F. Kerr, in New York. In addition to the correspondence from prominent persons (listed below) there is substantial correspondence from Elisabeth Marbury (1903-1912), Irving Winslow (1899-1906) and from James C.
