{"value"=>"<p>Gerald Freedman worked with New York Shakespeare Festival for over two decades beginning in 1960. In that time he directed more than 20 productions including <span class=\"title\">Ergo</span> (1968), <span class=\"title\">Hair</span> (1967), <span class=\"title\">Comedy of Errors</span> (1967), <span class=\"title\">Titus Andronicus</span> (1967), <span class=\"title\">Richard III</span> (1966), and <span class=\"title\">Love's Labor's Lost</span>(1965). He also served as the Festival's Artistic Director for several years in the late 1960s. His outside activities included teaching at Yale, judging drama competitions, lecturing, and directing <span class=\"title\">Macbird</span>, and <span class=\"title\">A Time for Singing</span>, for which he also co-authored the book and the lyrics. Gerald Freedman's other writing credits include the book and lyrics for <span class=\"title\">Take One Step</span> and the lyrics for a musical version of <span class=\"title\">Peer Gynt</span> which he directed and adapted.</p>"}
{"value"=>"<p>The Gerald Freedman Papers document his work at the Festival between 1966 and 1969 and also other of his theater related activities during that same period. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject, correspondent or name of production. The papers include correspondence, casting files, play reports and accompanying correspondence, productions files, scripts and miscellaneous papers relating to Freedman's work as a director, and his responsibilities as Artistic Director of the Festival. Material relating to his work on productions and projects outside of the New York Shakespeare Festival is also included.</p> <p> Correspondence includes personal letters, letters from colleagues, actors, former students, the audience, and occasionally playwrights. A series of letters between Freedman and Franco Brusati regarding the production of Brusati's <span class=\"title\">La Pieta di Novembre</span> are included in the Scripts-Correspondence files. Although the play was never produced at the NYSF, the correspondence covers the early stages of communication regarding the adaptation and translation of the play.</p> <p>The productions most fully represented in Freedman's papers are: <span class=\"title\">Ergo</span>, <span class=\"title\">Hair</span>, <span class=\"title\">Peer Gynt</span>, <span class=\"title\">A Time for Singing</span>, and <span class=\"title\">Titus Andronicus</span>. These files may include scripts, correspondence, casting information, and research notes. <span class=\"title\">ATime for Singing</span> was not a NYSF production. The files related to <span class=\"title\">Hair</span> are of particular interest as the production is not represented elsewhere in the NYSF collection.
