{"value"=>"<p>A letterpress book containing copies of Spinney's letters, August 26, 1893-February 3, 1896. Many are faded or smudged, and some have become altogether illegible. Several pages have been cut to remove letters. The last two letters, dated February 20, 1896, are signed by Charles R. Miller as president of The New York Times Publishing Company. During the period covered by this book, Spinney was the publisher of The Times and the secretary and treasurer of the company.</p> <p>The subject matter of many letters cannot be discerned because they refer to letters sent to The Times or to conversations not further described. The remaining letters deal principally with advertising received or solicited; circulation, subscriptions, and deliveries to newsdealers; maintenance and improvements of the building; leases of outside offices; staff and job applicants; financial matters; contract printing; paper and ink; and typesetting and other equipment.</p> <p>Of special interest are letters concerning the purchase and performance of Mergenthaler Linotype machines. Many letters also deal with membership in the United Press (Spinney was on its board of directors) and its fight with the Associated Press of Chicago (the so-called \"War of the News Associations.\")</p>"}
