{"value"=>"<p>This subseries offers partial documentation of CARE's work in Southern Africa. Lesotho and Mozambique are the only countries represented from the southern part of the continent. Arranged under the heading \"Lesotho Project\", the files document project supervised by CARE and other humanitarian organizations such as Catholic Relief Services (CRS). While there is no record for CARE's work in Lesotho during the late 1960s, the period of CARE's initial foray into Lesotho, there is some documentation for the early 1970s. The bulk of the files document the 1980s.</p> <p>The correspondence, reports focuses on the economic viability of Lesotho's national economy and the projects under operation during the 1980s. The subjects include country profiles, development of native industry such as the Lesotho hand-spun mohair project (samples with correspondence); the phase-out of the Catholic Relief Services Maternal Child Health program, circa 1988; food projects; and the work of ICFARM (Improved Community Forestry and Agriculture Management) from 1984-1991.</p> <p>The files on Mozambique are mostly proposals for projects that included CARE Italy's proposal for four-wheel drive vehicles to meet the need of transporting good from various locations, the integrated rural development program for the Cabora Bassa District, and a report on Mozambique's multiyear planning. The files contain correspondence, country profile, evaluations, memoranda, multiyear plans, project reports, trip reports, and PIEs.</p>"}
