{"value"=>"<p>CARE International, a network of CARE organizations in eleven countries, had its origins in two of CARE's affiliates, CARE Canada and CARE Europe. The former came into existence as directors of CARE's field offices in Toronto and Ottawa perceived the need for more autonomy. Already known as CARE of Canada since 1947, the Canadian field offices incorporated officially under that name in 1967. The following year, CARE's New York headquarters authorized the creation of a separate CARE Advisory Board for Canada, which gave more decision-making power to CARE officers there. In 1973, CARE of Canada, by then called CARE Canada, became an independent agency.</p> <p>CARE Europe grew out of the work of the International Lions Club in West Germany, which created and ran the fund-raising campaign \"Dank An CARE\" (Thanks to CARE) in 1972. The campaign was highly successful, and led to the establishment of a CARE agency in Europe, headquartered in Bonn, in 1976. When Germany instituted its own CARE affiliate in 1981, CARE Europe moved its headquarters to Paris. By then, CARE Norway had been created and plans for CAREs in Italy and Britain were underway, their popularity, as in Norway, France, and Germany, attributable largely to the fact that many Europeans remembered CARE's assistance to them after World War II and were eager to have the chance to aid others in need through CARE organizations.</p> <p>In 1979, planning had begun for the creation of a formal operating body called CARE International, based at the New York offices of CARE (which had become CARE U. S. A.), to assist with fund-raising and to coordinate and prevent duplication of efforts among the various CAREs. CARE International held its first organizational meetings on January 29, 1982, with representatives from CAREs Canada, Germany, Norway, and the U. S. A. participating.</p> <p>Membership in CARE International has continued to grow steadily. By the end of the 1980s, there were CARE International affiliates in eleven countries.</p>"}
