{"value"=>"<p>Correspondence, reports, personnel rosters, and other items from the Washington DC files of Kester Hastings, and, after 1973, his successors, Chris Schieffle and George Mathues. Materials fall into three categories: VVS personnel files (Boxes 1098-1108), correspondence and subject files (Boxes 1109-1112), and country and program files (Boxes 1113-1114).</p> <p>The Washington office had its own numeric filing system, a copy of which is in Box 1109. It provides for extreme specificity: e. g., 340.5.1 is the sub-category for reports on the Indonesia plastic surgery program. The general categories are:</p> <p>100: Communications, mostly between the DC office, CARE's New York office, and overseas missions.</p> <p>200: Medical specialists, particularly VVSes.</p> <p>300: Country and Program files.</p> <p>400: MEDICO Advisory Board.</p> <p>500: Organizations and Embassies.</p> <p>600: Accounting.</p> <p>700: Personnel: job descriptions, travel expense reports, etc.</p> <p>800: Miscellany, including information on donations, publicity, etc.</p> <p>With some exceptions, most notably the bulk of the MEDICO Advisory Board files, which are in Boxes 1041-1044, the original order has been maintained where possible.</p> <p>Boxes 1098-1108 contain the files kept on each volunteer specialist. There is very little of a confidential nature; most folders include correspondence between the assistant director and the volunteer concerning recruitment, travel arrangements, etc., and copies of the specialists' end-of-tour reports. In some folders are resumes or MEDICO application forms.</p> <p>Boxes 1109-1112 are subject files, mostly from the 1960s to mid-1970s. 1109 and 1110 contain the correspondence files (100s), to and from the New York office and each MEDICO country. Box 1110 also includes general information on the VVS program (200s), and several folders on MEDICO-affiliated organizations.</p> <p>The contents of Box 1111 are files on other institutions (500s), financial records (600s), chiefly re: petty cash and medical supplies; personnel information (700s), mostly pertaining to temporary help and the VVS program; and miscellany (800s), primarily publicity-related.</p> <p>Box 1112 contains unnumbered subject files, C-P. About one-third pertain to the International Eye Bank (International Eye Foundation after 1964), an ophthalmologists' association sponsored by MEDICO from 1961 to 1968.</p> <p>Boxes 1113-1124, country and program files (300s), consist almost entirely of correspondence and reports concerning specific overseas projects and general programming information. Many items are copies of materials in New York offices files.</p>"}
