{"value"=>"<p>Minutes of meetings of the MEDICO Advisory Board (MAB) and its various committees, lists of committee members, correspondence between MEDICO staff and Board members, annual reports from CARE's Program Department to the Board, and other materials.</p> <p>After its separation from the International Rescue Committee, MEDICO was governed by a twenty-six-member Board of Directors that included business and civic leaders as well as Tom Dooley, and by its Medical Advisory Board, whose membership had grown to nearly forty by early 1962. The two combined at the time of the CARE/MEDICO merger to form the MEDICO Advisory Board.</p> <p>Most of these files are those of Kester Hastings and his successors in Washington DC, and include agendas, announcements, and minutes of the meetings of the MAB and its numerous standing committees (Boxes 1041 and 1042) as well as correspondence with individual Board members (Boxes 1043 and 1044). The contents of Box 1045 are from the New York assistant directors' office, and consist mainly of correspondence concerning MAB activities.</p> <p>Boxes 1042 and 1045 also contain material pertaining to Orthopedics Overseas and the MEDICO Advisory Committee of Canada. The former, a volunteer organization of orthopedic surgeons founded in 1959, was a member agency of MEDICO from 1961 to 1981. CARE of Canada instituted its own MEDICO program in 1963, owing largely to MEDICO's popularity among Canadian doctors and nurses, who comprised about one-fourth of MEDICO's volunteers.</p>"}
