{"value"=>"<p>Correspondence to and from field staff, personnel data, field reports, donor files, correspondence with national organizations, and other materials make up this subseries. The Field Operations Division is primarily concerned with the fund-raising efforts of CARE's eighteen regional offices in the U. S. and Canada, and with the generation of income through foundations and corporate donors, bequests, and mass mailings, as well as through the work of other non-profit organizations in CARE's behalf.</p> <p>Boxes 946-957 contain the files of the National Field Operations Director, later the Resource Development Director. Boxes 946-951 contain John \"Jack\" Leonard's files (1958-1968), which pertain mostly to fund-raising campaigns. Boxes 946-948 feature various campaigns such as the Vicks-CARE Crusade. Boxes 949-951 contain the files of the Combined Federal Campaign and the Federal Services Joint Campaign. Both were efforts by the government to generate interest among federal employees in government-approved charities.</p> <p>Box 952 contains the correspondence of Everett Thorner (1969-1971) with various field offices. Gordon Haskell succeeded Thorner and held the position until 1978. Boxes 953-956 are his files. Box 953 deals with various field personnel from 1960-1975. Box 954 contains field correspondence. Boxes 955-956 are further fund-raising files. Box 957 contains Susan Overman's files, including correspondence, field conference data, and computer system implementation information.</p> <p>Boxes 958-965 contain the Field Staff Director's files from 1965-1983. These files primarily were maintained by Michael Kraeg, Field Operations Director, who coordinated the work of the various field offices and channeled communications between CARE headquarters and field office staff. He worked closely with the national Field Operations Director. The bulk of his files consists of correspondence to and from the field offices.</p> <p>The Division's field offices files, 1956-1984, are stored in boxes 966-979. These contain correspondence between each office and the national headquarters in New York, press clippings about local events, information on fund-raising techniques, and personnel data. Boxes 966-972 contain monthly reports from the various offices, filed alphabetically by city, describing contact with donors as well as in-house matters. (Readers should note that the reports from the Ottawa and Toronto field offices are filed under \"Canada. \").</p> <p>The contents of boxes 973-975, Washington, D. C. Field Office files, 1956-1983, were transferred from that office at the time of its move to smaller quarters. Of note is its involvement in CARE's 25th anniversary celebration. Boxes 976-978 contain the Tri-State (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) Field Office files, 1967-1984. In addition to the usual promotions, Box 978 includes various Christmas, Mother's and Father's Day, and MEDICO campaigns. Box 979 is from the Philadelphia Field Office, 1977-1984, containing press clippings and files of the donating foundations in the Philadelphia area. (The Tri-State and Philadelphia offices closed in 1984, but have since re-opened).</p> <p>Boxes 980-989 hold the files of the National Organizations Division, which coordinates the fund-raising activities of other non-profit societies on CARE's behalf. These societies, many of which are CARE member agencies, include the American Legion Auxiliary, the 4-H Program, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the National Council of Negro Women, the National Grange, and Rotary International. Usually, organizations raise monies for specified projects: for example, in 1959, American 4-H Club chapters provided farm tool kits and hand cultivators for sister clubs in Mexico.</p> <p>The National Organizations files consist mostly of correspondence between the National Organizations directors and CARE missions and field offices concerning the work of the donor organizations, as well as brochures, reports, and other information about those organizations. Coverage is strongest for the General Federation of Women's Clubs (Boxes 983-986) a member of CARE since 1954 and one of its most active fund-raisers.</p> <p>Boxes 990-995, the records of the Foundations Division (renamed Corporations/Foundations/Major Donors after 1980), are mainly files on individual foundations (Boxes 990-992) containing copies of letters of acknowledgment from CARE, occasional incoming correspondence from donors, and worksheets, copies of receipts, and action forms explaining how each contribution would be used. Files date from 1952 to 1980; coverage is strongest for 1960-1975. They represent a 20% sampling of CARE's inactive Foundations files. Box 993 contains files pertaining to two major gifts from the late 1970s-mid-1980s.</p> <p>The remaining files, circa 1980-1987, are those of the Foundations Division's Assistant Director (Box 994) and the Director of Corporate Affairs (Box 995). The contents of both include copies of outgoing memos, information sent to and from field offices, and related administrative matters.</p> <p>Boxes 996-999 contain a 20% sample of the Planned Giving Division's files on deceased donors who left part or all of their estates to CARE, 1969-1982. They consist mostly of correspondence between CARE and estate attorneys, and copies of wills and other legal documents.</p> <p>The Direct Mail Division (Boxes 1000-1001) designs and distributes CARE's mass mailings to past and potential donors, and monitors the income generated by those mailings. Box 1000 includes examples of brochures and other appeals to donors from 1946 to 1983.</p> <p>The Special Events Division of CARE (Boxes 1002-1004) coordinates the activities of the Public Relations Department, which plans promotional and fund-raising events, and the work of Resource Development, which carries them out. Most of these files are those of the Special Events Coordinator, Linda Porto, from 1980-1981; they consist mainly of memos to and from field office staff and CARE administrators, and files on such fund- raisers as radiothons and telethons and on the design of posters and brochures.</p>"}
