{"value"=>"<p>Correspondence and subject files of the Director and Assistant Directors, press releases, radio and television public service announcements, and production books comprise this subseries. The Public Relations Division deals with the print and broadcast media, through which it informs the public about CARE's goals, policies, and short and long-term programs, promotes various fund-raising campaigns and issues press releases about them.</p> <p>Boxes 871-882 are the files of the Public Relations Directors, Sam Kaufman (ca. 1953-1970), Emma Dash Gregory (ca. 1973-1975) and Alex Klein (1975-1981). The Public Relations Directors work in conjunction with the Assistant Public Relations Directors in responding to questions from the public and providing the print and broadcast media with up-to-date information on CARE projects and activities. They also communicate frequently with CARE mission's staff concerning the need for photographs and \"human interest\" stories to use in promotional literature.</p> <p>The files of the division's two Assistant Directors are in Boxes 883-898. Boxes 883-890 are those of the Editorial Director (also called the Press Relations and Public Information Director), mostly from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. Items in some cases duplicate those in the Public Relations Directors' files, but are in general more recent. Box 883 contains biographical sketches of many CARE staff and members of the Board of Directors, prepared by the Editorial Division, mostly in the 1970s, with a few files contributed more recently by other departments. Of note in Box 886 among the files on the International Year of the Child (1979) is a letter from the writer E. B. White, giving CARE permission to quote from a passage in <span class=\"title\"> Charlotte's Web</span>.</p> <p>Boxes 891-898 contain the Broadcast and Special Events Director's files, 1952-1984. Concerned mainly with television and radio, the Director sets up opportunities to air CARE material, and prepares and approves the copy to be used. Box 891 contains the subject files of Dorothea Beckman, 1952-1967, including several on the Hale and Baker Agency, which represented CARE in acquiring air space and studio time for CARE productions.</p> <p>Box 892 contains more of Beckman's files and her successor's, Jules Evan Baker, formerly of the Hale and Baker Agency. Boxes 893-898 are solely Jules Baker's, 1957-1984, containing correspondence and special events information.</p> <p>Roughly one-half of Subseries 4.2 (Boxes 899-931) consists of copies of press releases and television and radio public service announcements, mostly from the late 1940s and 1950s. Boxes 899-902 hold a nearly complete run of general press releases in numbered volumes, from 1946-1958. (The papers have been removed from binders and placed in folders). Boxes 903-905 contain scattered press releases not found in the above volumes, 1949-1985. Box 906 contains foreign press releases, 1949-1960.</p> <p>Boxes 907-916 hold special press releases. Whereas general releases are sent out to all forms of media and organizations, special releases go to specific groups; for example, to the labor press or to regional radio stations, such as those in the Ohio Valley area. These are in numbered books in chronological order. (Many of the later books are missing). Boxes 917-918 contain press releases pertaining to MEDICO.</p> <p>Boxes 919-924 contain radio and television scripts, from 1949-1979, in numbered volumes. Such public service announcements are 10-60 seconds in length, and are generally pleas for contributions for ongoing projects, though such emergencies as the Iranian earthquake of 1982 warrant special announcements. There are also holiday campaign ad spots. Box 925 contains various scripts not included in the volumes.</p> <p>Boxes 926-931 contain production books, the rough drafts and early ideas that were the basis for articles as well as for the above radio and television scripts. The books run from 1956-1957, followed by a gap of twenty years. There is a second run from 1977 through 1979.</p> <p>(called Public Information Director after 1980).</p>"}
