{"value"=>"<p>Correspondence is abundant within the Huntington family and spans several generations. Some of the earliest letters are to and from Elisha and Hannah Huntington at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. There is a lengthy letter from Elisha to his uncle Nehemiah Cleveland on July 15, 1817, when Elisha is living in Marietta, Ohio. He discusses many of the issues in his new town, including religious society there, physicians in the town, purchasing land, and how \"democracy is in its worst shape, with the legislature without wisdom and common honesty.\" Letters from Hannah Hinckley Huntington to her twin sister Mary Hinckley in the 1830s and 1840s tell news of the children, family, household details and also of Hannah's social life in Lowell, Massachusetts. Correspondence from the 1860s among family members often references the Civil War in which the oldest son of Elisha and Hannah, James, is fighting. Letters from James during this time also document this event and within his correspondence is his report on the Battle of Chancellorsville.</p> <p>Later generations of Huntingtons are also present within the correspondence. William Reed Huntington's correspondence includes letters from professional associations. (It should be noted though, that most of William Reed's public papers were separated from this collection and sent to the Archives of the Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas prior to this collection being donated to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society by Madge Huntington Cooper). There is also a good deal of correspondence to and from William Reed's son, Francis Cleveland Huntington II and his wife Susan Butler Huntington.</p> <p>The correspondence is arranged alphabetically, with outgoing letters listed before incoming.</p>"}
