{"value"=>"<p>The Commission to Study the Organization of Peace (CSOP) was formed in 1939 as a research affiliate of the League of Nations Association for the purpose of developing plans for a new system of international organization to supplant the League of Nations, and to study and report on issues facing the international community. The CSOP relied upon its members, outside scholars, and experts assembled in working groups to prepare reports for circulation to universities, legislative bodies, governmental officials, and other leaders of opinion. Some thirty reports were published by CSOP on a broad range of issues including arms control, peaceful coexistence, disarmament, charter review, human rights, and the management of ocean resources. Many of its members attended the San Francisco Conference in 1945 as members of the United States Delegation to the Conference.</p> <p>The CSOP remained an affiliate of the League of Nations Association and of its successor, the American Association for the United Nations until 1967, when it became fully independent. During the 1970s, the CSOP came upon hard times. Its founding members had either died or gone into retirement; and public disenchantment with the United Nations combined with an economic recession, made the obtaining of funds more difficult, with the result that by 1981 the CSOP had virtually suspended its operations.</p> <p>Its principal officers included Eichelberger, who was director (1939-1964), chairman (1964-1968), and executive director (1968-1975); James T. Shotwell (chairman, 1939-1955); Arthur N. Holcombe (chairman, 1955-1964); Louis B. Sohn (chairman, 1968-1971, 1981-1991); Luther H. Evans (chairman, 1972-); and James Frederick Green (executive director, 1975-1980). Margaret Olson served as secretary (1939-1977).</p>"}

{"value"=>"<p>The bulk of the records of the Commission to Study the Organization of Peace consists of correspondence of the executive directors, Eichelberger, James Frederick Green, and Louis B. Sohn with members of CSOP and its working groups, scholars, United Nations officials, government officials, public figures, and foundation officers. The correspondence, which is arranged alphabetically by year, relates to the drafting of reports and statements, funding, meetings and other internal matters. Included also are meeting minutes of the executive committee, rough drafts of reports, copies of printed publications of the CSOP, and audio recordings. After 1975 the records are only partially sorted.</p> <p>Additional records consist of correspondence of Louis B. Sohn and Estelle Linzer (1982-1991); minutes of a meeting (November 19, 1983); and stenographic minutes of a conference (August 1967) of CSOP which was held at the Johnson Foundation, Wingspread, Racine, Wisconsin.</p>"}
