{"value"=>"<p>This subseries holds scores for the bulk of Luening's music, published and unpublished. The scores consist of varying combinations of sketches, manuscripts, full scores, parts, publishing masters, and published scores with annotations and edits. Some manuscripts are unfinished.</p> <p>The Music Division cataloged many, but not all, of the scores. These are described under call number JPB 94-7 Series 11, under which each cataloged piece has its own number (or range of numbers). These numbers are noted with each title in the container list. Consult the catalog records for full descriptions of the scores. Many of the uncataloged scores have content descriptions.</p> <p>Among the many notable Luening works found here are the opera <span class=\"title\">Evangeline</span> in various stages of composition; early electronic and tape works such as <span class=\"title\">Fantasy In Space</span> and <span class=\"title\">Low Speed</span>; electronic works co-composed with Vladimir Ussachevsky, including <span class=\"title\">Concerted Piece for Tape Recorder and Orchestra</span>, <span class=\"title\">Invention for Flute on Tape Recorder</span>, and <span class=\"title\">Suite from King Lear</span> (composed for Orson Welles's 1956 production of the play); song settings of poems by Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Hermann Hesse, James Joyce, William Blake, and other writers; and instrumental works for soloists, orchestras, chamber groups, and choirs.</p> <p>Other works held in the series are the cantata <span class=\"title\">No Jerusalem But This</span>; two string quartets; canons and canonic studies for various instrumentations; solo pieces for clarinet, piano, violin, flute, and cello; chamber music for woodwind quartet, brass quintet, and a sextet for woodwinds, strings, and horns; and the composition <span class=\"title\">A Day in the Country</span>, written for violin and tape recorder. Orchestral works such as <span class=\"title\">Wisconsin Symphony</span>, multiple <span class=\"title\">Symphonic Fantasias</span> and <span class=\"title\">Symphonic Interludes</span>,<span class=\"title\"> Sonority Forms</span> 1 and 2 are also present.</p> <p>At the top of this subseries is a set of listings of Luening's compositions, the largest and most complete of which was compiled by Luening's assistant Paul de Jong in 1997. Many works originated with a title which was later changed. The title used by de Jong is the one used in the container list below, though earlier titles are often noted as some scores may still bear them. There are several compositions in this subseries which do not appear on de Jong's list, including an unfinished 1996 piece for flute and guitar which represents Luening's final compositional work. The only posthumous content in this subseries is the 2000 transcription and performance instruction for Luening's <span class=\"title\">Nocturnes</span> for flute and tape recorder.</p>"}
