{"value"=>"<p>From 1894 to 1898 Carman served as Chairman of the Antietam Battlefield Board. The Board's charge was to chronicle the history of the battle. As seen in the Board members' correspondence, Carman collected many affidavits from people who took part in the battle. Also present in the collection is a series of first-hand reports that outline the movements of specific divisions and batteries. One result of Carman's work with the Antietam Battlefield Board was the placement of hundreds of markers on the grounds of the Antietam Battlefield National Park which illustrate troop movement during the battle. The 1898 publication of \"The Map of the Battlefield of Antietam\", which both served as a guide to regiment markers found at the Antietam Battlefield National Park and as a reference for troop movements and battles that took place over the course of the two days of fighting.
