{"value"=>"<p>This sub-series primarily contains Hitchcock's research and notes on the work of Charles Ives and Henry Cowell. Other topics of research include Aaron Copland and Minimalism.</p> <p>In addition to serving as co-founder and longtime president of the Charles Ives Society, Hitchcock edited an edition of Ives's <span class=\"title\">Three Harvest Home Chronicles</span> and published the book <span class=\"title\">Critical Commentaries for Charles Ives 129 Songs</span>. The papers contain Hitchcock's research and notes for both, and a small set of Ives scores containing his annotations. The files for the Ives 129 songs commentaries contain Hitchock's printed notes on 84 of the songs; some also contain annotated scores. All are undated unless otherwise noted. In addition, the Ives papers include subject files containing research notes and correspondence. These mostly discuss Ives compositions, but some cover topics such as Harmony Ives or Herman Langinger, the engraver for Ives's \"Comedy\" from the Fourth Symphony (as published by Henry Cowell's New Music Publications).</p> <p>Henry Cowell's widow, Sidney Robertson Cowell, assigned Hitchcock to be the arbiter for the Cowell estate and for the Cowell Collection that was donated to Music Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (during the 1970s it was on deposit at the library, but not yet owned by it). Hitchcock's Cowell papers include articles about and analysis of Cowell's work, files concerning the Cowell Collection, a small set of biographical source material and correspondence with Sidney Robertson Cowell.</p> <p>Hitchcock's Cowell papers also include a set of unpublished Cowell songs that were originally going to be published by Peter Garland's <span class=\"title\">Soundings</span> press in the early 1990s. The project, which Hitchcock was assisting in the capacity of editor, never came to fruition. The papers here include clear copyist versions of the songs and correspondence with Garland and Sidney Cowell about the project. They also include correspondence with the mezzo-soprano Wendy Hillhouse about the Cowell songs, unrelated to the Garland publishing project. (Note: Series II contains other Ives and Cowell papers pertaining to the activities of ISAM.)</p> <p>The research files also contain sound recordings Hitchcock collected, some unique. These include music by George Chadwick, Roger Reynolds and Arthur Foote, radio interviews with Aaron Copland and Richard Rodgers, and 60 tapes of performances conducted by Richard Korn.</p>"}
