{"value"=>"<p>Founded in 1853 as a coal carrier, the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad was one of Taylor's most creative enterprises. In 1854 he bought $25,000 worth of stock in the company and joined fellow New York merchants on the Board of directors. Through the leasing of the Cayuga and Susquehanna (see above) and other roads, and by constructing new track and absorbing several strategic trunk lines, Taylor and his associates expanded the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad eastward to tidewater and westward into the heartland.</p>"}
