Included are papers relating to a proposed Broadway underground rail road and to a tunnel under the East River; papers relating to Serrell's court appearances, his patents, and to his service as captain of the corps of engineers of the 11th Regiment of the New York State Militia. There are also a few personal miscellaneous papers, a few cabinet portraits of unidentified persons, and clippings relating to New York City and to the development of its infrastructure including and East River bridge and tunnel, and the blasting at Hell Gate to remove obstructions in the East River.</p> <p>The papers relating to Serrell's service as captain of the corps of engineers of 11th Regiment of the New York State Militia include copies of orders for meetings issued by Serrell and by the Headquarters of the 1st Division (Washington Rifles); a scrapbook containing correspondence to Serrell from Col. Homer Bostwick, regimental commander; brigade and regimental orders; a plan drawn by Serrell of Camp Washington on Staten Island containing an inventory of military stores there; and Serrell's \"Engineer Drill\" book. The drill book contains a roster of members of the corps of engineers; drill instructions illustrated by pen and ink sketches of military figures; copies of orders issued; a roll for drills and parades; and instructions relative to military field maneuvers, the use of the semaphore and the techniques of triangulation.</p>"}
