{"value"=>"<p>Officers corresponding for the League include Roger Baldwin, Maureen R. Berman, Roberta Cohen, Felice D. Gaer, Donald F. Keys, Jerome Shestack, and Frieda Zimmerman. Some of the correspondence and papers are in foreign languages including French, German, and Spanish.</p> <p>The papers relate to a broad range human rights abuses in Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and to a lesser extent, in Africa and Asia. Included is correspondence with governmental officials, representatives of diplomatic missions to the United Nations, with human rights organizations in America and abroad and with League affiliates and its personal representatives in foreign countries. Included are case sheets which record specific cases of human rights abuses and actions taken by the League to redress them. Some of the case sheets were prepared by the League's Human Rights Defenders Project which focused on aiding human rights advocates in foreign countries who were persecuted by their governments for their defense of human rights.</p> <p>The file relating to El Salvador includes a \"Report on Human Rights in El Salvador / A Report to the Board of the American Civil Liberties Union\" (January 1982) including notes, rough drafts and the final published report.</p> <p>The files relating to Mexico include a \"Report of the Commission of Inquiry to Mexico\" [sic] which contains a list of Mexican prisoners interviewed and their handwritten testimonies in Spanish.</p> <p>The file relating to Spain includes correspondence with the League's representative (Betty Luissier) relating to the trial of the \"Carabanchel Ten\", the repression of the trade union movement, and political prisoners.</p> <p>The file relating to the USSR includes papers (1970-72) relative to the founding of the Moscow Human Rights Committee (a League affiliate) founded by Andrei Sakharov; a report by Sam Dash of his trip to the Soviet Union; and typed transcripts of phone conversations between officials of the League in New York and Valeriy Chalidze in Moscow.</p>"}
