{"value"=>"<p>Edmond Pauker, a literary agent, was born circa 1880 in Budapest, Hungary. After an early career as a professor of law and economics, he started working in theater. Pauker came to the United States in 1922 and established a literary agency representing playwrights in New York City.</p> <p>During the 1920s and 1930s, much of his business came from his relationships with European colleagues. Pauker was the United States representative for a number of agencies in Germany, Hungary, and Austria. His business arrangements with Felix Bloch Erben, Dr. Alexander Marton, Georg Marton, Paul Zsolnay, the Society of Authors and Playwrights of Hungary, and the International Copyright Bureau, Ltd., enabled him to arrange for the production and sale of rights to numerous plays by European authors such as Ferenc Molnár, Miklos Laszlo, Lajos Zilahy, and Melchior Lengyel. His American clients included Vicki Baum, Edward Chodorov, Joseph Fields, and Russell Janney. Pauker was also instrumental in arranging for the sale of European rights for works of a number of other American writers including S. N. Behrman, Theodore Dreiser, and Robert Sherwood.</p> <p>Pauker gave up his agency in 1959. He died on May 6, 1962.</p>"}

They document Pauker's career primarily through correspondence with producers and publishers regarding the sale and production of literary properties for stage and film. The papers also contains photographs of productions and actors, as well as programs and publicity materials.</p> <p>The correspondence, dating from 1922 to 1953, is with playwrights, publishers, producers, actors, theater owners, and agents. Among the playwrights are Lajos Zilahy, Edward Chodorov, Ferenc Molnár, George Froeschel, and Arndt Giusti. Extensive correspondence is present for three publishers: Georg Marton, Paul Zsolnay, and Chronos Verlag. Producers represented include Charles Frohman, Inc., Chamberlain Brown, the Columbia Broadcasting System, and Columbia Pictures. There is a small amount of correspondence with actors Marilyn Coleman and Olga Grey. Correspondence is in English, German, and Hungarian.</p> <p>Much of the correspondence is filed alphabetically by correspondent or play, followed by a chronological run. Most content is under the letters C, G, and Z. Correspondence may also contain programs, clippings, and financial statements. They also include plays by Ferenc Molnár, Milan Begovic, and Dezsӧ Szomory, as well as an operetta by the composer Franz Lehár. Researchers should check the chronological runs for further correspondence with individuals who have their own files.</p> <p>The photographs date from 1923 to 1925 and consist of actor publicity shots as well as production images. Actors pictured include Leopoldine Konstantin, Renee Gaston, and Gabor Krausz. Some are autographed to Pauker. An undated album contains about 15 large photographs of Alex Angelo, an actor of the silent film era.</p> <p>Programs and handbills are for plays by authors whom Pauker represented, and date from 1906 to 1962. Earlier programs (1906-1922) are for American productions. The 1962 programs are for plays in Romania.</p> <p>Publicity materials date from 1929 to 1937. They consist of posters, promotional and souvenir booklets, handbills, clippings, and biographies of actors or directors.</p>"}
