{"value"=>"<p>Raoul Camus, a scholar of American band music, is professor emeritus of music at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York. He has published several books on the history of military bands and secular music in the United States. A past president of the Society for American Music, he earned his Ph.D. in music administration from New York University, and spent a number of years teaching instrumental music in secondary schools. Prior to teaching, he managed a major music publishing firm, and performed professionally on the French horn. Camus is also a retired army reserve bandmaster. For many years he was director of New York’s famed 42nd (Rainbow) Division Band.</p> <p>Jimmy Lanin was a dance band leader, and one of the six older brothers of the famed band leader Lester Lanin (1907-2004), many of whom were band leaders as well. Never as well-known as those of his brothers Lester and Sam, Jimmy Lanin’s band performed at the same types of functions: society parties, debutante balls, social clubs, industrial and business conferences, political and military balls, and high school or college proms.</p>"}
