{"value"=>"Caroline Augusta White Soule (1824-1903) was an American author and Universalist missionary and minister. After the death in 1843 of her husband, Henry Birdsall Soule, a Universalist minister, she supported her children by writing and teaching. In 1869 she helped found and was the president of the Woman's Centenary Association, a Universalist organization whose purpose was to aid disabled preachers and their families, assist women stuudying for the ministry, and do missionary work in the U.S. and abroad. In 1879 she started St. Paul's Universalist Church in Glasgow, Scotland, and served as its pastor. Collection consists of correspondence, newsclippings and other printed matter. Bulk of the correspondence is Soule's letters to Rev. Henry Williamson, Universalist pastor in Dundee, Scotland, concerning her missionsary work, her preaching in Scotland and the U.S., and family and personal matters. Other papers contain manuscript and printed materials about her life; announcement and programs, 1875-1890; printed copy of a sermon delivered by Soule in 1890; and letters, 1878-1916, to Rev. Williamson from others."}

{"value"=>"<p>Caroline A. Soule, author and Universalist churchwoman, missionary, and preacher, was born in Albany, New York in 1824. She married Henry Birdsall Soule, a Universalist minister, in 1843, and the family moved from town to town in Connecticut and Massachusetts following Henry Soule's preaching career. When Soule died in 1852, Caroline A. Soule took over the support of her five young children by teaching and writing. She contributed articles to Universalist magazines and wrote stories, novels, and a biography of her husband. From 1856-1865 Soule was an editor for the <em render=\"underline\">Ladies Repository</em>, a Universalist magazine.</p> <p>In 1869 Soule helped found the Woman's Centenary Association (originally called the Woman's Centenary Aid Association), a Universalist organization whose purpose was to aid disabled preachers and their families, assist women studying for the ministry, and do missionary work in the United States and abroad. Soule served as president until 1880. Soule was also active in the temperance movement, and in Sorosis, the women's club.</p> <p>In 1875 Soule went on a trip to England and Scotland to recover her health, and met a group of Universalists in Scotland. She returned to Scotland in 1878 as a missionary for the Woman's Centenary Association. In 1879 she founded St. Paul's Universalist Church in Glasgow and became its Pastor, and in 1880 she was ordained. Soule remained in Scotland for the rest of her life except for a period, 1882-1886, when she returned to the United States to work for the Woman's Centenary Association. She died in Glasgow in 1903.</p>"}

Henry Williamson, the Universalist pastor of the Dundee Unitarian Christian Church, Dundee, Scotland, dating from 1875, the year of her first trip to Scotland until her death in 1903. The letters mainly concern her missionary work and preaching in Scotland, in the town of Dunfermline, and in Glasgow. They also cover intervals spent in the United States (1876-1877 and 1882-1886) at her home in Fordham [Bronx], New York City, and preaching in New Jersey and in the West and Midwest. Soule mentions delivering a lecture on higher education for women in Missouri (September 24, 1877 letter). News of health, children, and other personal matters is also included. Soule attended several farewell parties in Philadelphia for Susan B. Anthony, who was about to sail for England, and her descriptions of these (February 22, 1883) are noteworthy.</p> <p>The rest of the papers consists of: clippings of obituaries and other manuscript and printed material about her life; announcements and programs, 1875-1890, for services and other events at which Soule or Williamson led; a printed copy of a sermon \"A royal woman\" delivered by Soule on November 16, 1890 in Dundee; and letters to Rev. Williamson from correspondents other than Soule, 1878-1916.</p>"}
