He resided briefly in America, but his Royalist sentiments prompted his return to Scotland, where he was appointed chief clerk to the committee of the Privy Council. His works include histories of the American Colonies and of Scotland, an examination of the contested authorship of Shakespeare's plays, a commissioned biographies of Thomas Paine and Daniel Defoe, and various political works.</p>"}
