The hull was built by John Ericsson who was the builder and designer of the Monitor. Correspondence, 1862-1866, is from officials of the Navy Dept. and U.S. Steamer Sacramento. Proceedings of court-martial, 1863, are from on board the Passaic. Official documents, 1862-1866, include abstracts of small stores, vouchers of clothing and money, officers' orders and accounts, reports, registers of allotments, receipts, ratings, and general muster book of the Passaic."}

It took part in the bombardment of the Charleston Harbor in April of 1863. The \"Passaic\" was hit 35 times but did not sink. It was launched on August 30, 1862 and commissioned on November <em render=\"italic\">25</em>, 1862. Percival Drayton served as its first captain. The hull was built by the engineer and inventor John Ericsson who was also the builder and designer of the \"Monitor\". For the construction of the \"Passaic\" he subcontracted the Continental Iron Works of Greenpoint, N. Y. and the DelaMeter Iron Works of New York City. The service speed of the \"Passaic\" was 6 knots.</p>"}

There are a few letters from Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy. This series includes the official correspondence of the U. S. Steamer \"Sacramento\" (1864-1866). Also included are the proceedings of a court martial on the \"Passaic\" on Oct. 7, 1863. There are many abstracts of small stores (1862-1863), vouchers for clothing and money (1862- 1863) and officer's orders and accounts (1862-1863). Present are transfer accounts (1862-1863), ratings (1861-1864), reports and statements (1862-1863). One can also find ship's messes (1863) and muster rolls (1862-1863). In the collection are two packages of similar material. The first package contains the paymaster's letterbook (Oct. 1862-Dec. 1863), accounts of the medical dept. (1862-1863), registers of allotments (1862) which includes that of the U. S. Gunboat \"Chocura\" and receipts of pay and provisions received (1862-1863). The general muster book of the \"Passaic\" (Sept. 1862-Oct. 1863) comprises the second package.</p>"}
