scopecontent
{"value"=>"<p>The collection consists chiefly of letters received by Flagg, although some of his letters are also present as is a small amount of third party correspondence. Most of the letters are from Flagg's political colleagues Silas Wright, Jr. and Michael Hoffman, members of the \"Albany Regency\" a group of radical Democratic Republicans in northern New York. The letters concern political and economic issues, both national and local, of the period from 1823 to 1848, covering topics such as free trade, public debt, construction of canal systems in New York, currency and banking, presidential campaigns, taxation, extension of slavery and states rights, and annexation of Texas. Letters also trace the collapse of the National Republican Party, the new Whig Party, the rise of the Democratic wing of the Republican Party, and the development of Jacksonian democracy. Other correspondents include John A. Dix, R.H. Walworth, W.L. Marcy, Albert Gallatin and Preston King.</p> <p>In addition to correspondence, the collection contains Flagg's notes on periodical articles, 1829-1831, a newspaper report of Flagg's speech in Watertown, NY in 1844, and printed schedules and inventories of bank assets, 1845.</p>"}
