After practicing law and being active in real estate, building and investments, Isaacs was elected president of the Borough of Manhattan in 1937. In 1941 he became a member of the City Council and served in that position for twenty years. He also was involved with many civic and welfare organizations. Collection consists of correspondence, financial and organizational papers, scrapbooks, clippings, and memorabilia mainly covering Isaacs' tenure as Manhattan Borough President and New York City Councilman. Records include general correspondence and papers, 1901-1962; borough presidency papers, 1938-1941; City Council papers, 1941-1962; campaign for City Council papers, 1941-1961; scrapbooks of letters, clippings and memorabilia, 1899-1962; miscellaneous papers; and letters from prominent persons."}

{"value"=>"<p>Stanley M. Isaacs (1882-1962), a New York City politician, was born in Manhattan and lived in the borough all his life. After graduation from Columbia College and New York Law School, he was admitted to the Bar in 1905; practiced law as a member of the firm of M. S. and I. S. Isaacs for fifteen years; and thereafter, until 1938, was associated with Edgar A. Levy in real estate, building and investments. In 1910 Isaacs married Edith Somborn, with whom he had two children: Helen E. and Myron S. During the First World War Isaacs was chairman of Local Board #164, and later active in the office of the Secretary of War on Labor Problems. He was elected President of the Borough of Manhattan in 1937, serving for a full term of four years. In 1941 he was elected Member of the City Council, leading all the Anti-Tammany candidates in Manhattan. Isaacs held this post until the time of his death 20 years later. He was active all his life in many Civic and Welfare organizations, among them are: President, United Neighborhood Houses; Member, Executive Committee, Welfare Council; Trustee at Large, Federation of Jewish Philanthropic Societies; Member, American Jewish Committee; Honorary Trustee, Educational Alliance (President for three years); Vice President, Baron De Hirsh Fund; Chairman, Borough Committees, Russian War Relief; Member, Executive Committee, National Refugee Service; Vice President, City-Wide Citizens' Committee on Harlem; Director, Wiltwyck School for Boys; and many more.</p>"}

Isaacs are arranged in two major series: his general correspondence and papers, 1901-1962, and his scrapbooks covering 1899-1962.</p> <p>The general correspondence, incoming/outgoing, is in chronological order and alphabetical order within the year. Contained here is Isaacs' personal correspondence, real estate and financial papers plus organizational papers and correspondence relating to the many activities Isaacs was involved or interested in. Subdivided within the general correspondence are four sections: first - correspondence and papers covering his tenure as Manhattan Borough President which began January 1, 1938 and ended December 31, 1941. These files contain material relating to Isaacs appointment of the alleged communist Simon W. Gerson as confidential examiner and construction of the East River Drive; second - correspondence and papers covering his twenty years in the City Council, during which he was frequently the only Republican in the Council and therefore served on every committee; third - Isaacs' campaign for City Council correspondence and papers including speeches, contribution correspondence and congratulatory letters; fourth is a box of letters to and from \"prominent people\" that were separated from the rest of the collection by Mrs. Isaacs for use in writing her husband's biography.</p> <p>The second series consists of Isaac's scrapbooks; thirty five volumes in all. These are made up of newspaper clippings that reflect the political and civic activities of Mr. Isaacs. Also contained in scrapbooks is some incoming/outgoing correspondence interfiled, numerous banquet programs, invitations, and memorabilia. Included in the first volume of the scrapbooks are a number of medals, buttons, and ribbons given to Isaacs for participating in difference committees and organizations.</p>"}
