{"value"=>"<p>The Southern Africa Committee (SAC) was an American collective of anti-apartheid activists and scholars under the National Student Christian Federation (NSCF). The NSCF founded the SAC in 1964 in response to Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in what is now known as Zimbabwe. The SAC, and the NCSF more broadly, were closely associated with South Africa's University Christian Movement (UCM) during the formation of the Black Consciousness Movement and were active organizers in divestment from South African Apartheid. The NSCF changed its name to the University Christian Movement (UCM) in 1966.</p> <p>The SAC began printing the <span class=\"title\">Rhodesia News Summary</span> in 1965. The publication was renamed the <span class=\"title\">Southern Africa News Bulletin</span> in 1966, then was renamed <span class=\"title\">Southern Africa: A Monthly Survey of News and Opinion</span> from 1967 until the name was shortened to <span class=\"title\">Southern Africa</span> in 1973. <span class=\"title\">Southern Africa</span> was a New York City-based monthly magazine discussing liberation and decolonization movements primarily in Southern Africa and related solidarity activities in the United States. Countries of focus include South Africa, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. The publication also focused on U.S. investments, and summarized current events in the region of Southern Africa during the Apartheid era in South Africa and modern-day Zimbabwe's fight for freedom. After the UCM dissolved in 1970, the SAC operated independently until publication halted in 1983.</p>"}

{"value"=>"<p>The Southern Africa Committee records, dating from 1965 to 1985, document the committee's anti-apartheid activism and its magazine Southern Africa organized by the following groupings: Administrative Files, Research Files, Articles, Interviews, and Activism.</p> <p>Administrative files include advertisements; correspondence; design drafts for <span class=\"title\">Southern Africa</span>; financial records; annotated galley proofs; issue outlines; mailing lists; and miscellaneous administrative records of the Southern Africa Committee (SAC). Financial records include material related to the SAC's fundraising, newsletter subscriptions, and other administrative tasks.</p> <p>Research Files are organized by subject matter and include news clippings, printed matter, and some notes from international and local publications related to political and economic matters of Southern African countries. The Research files also include bibliographies, some of which are handwritten on index cards.</p> <p>The Articles files are comprised of published and unpublished article drafts in addition to pitched articles for <span class=\"title\">Southern Africa</span>. Files also include any printed matter and correspondence directly related to the writing of the article. This grouping also contains article fragments and articles where the author or title is unclear.</p> <p>The Interviews files are comprised of interview transcripts and summaries with government officials, activists, scholars, and other stakeholders in the anti-apartheid movement. These files notably include interviews with Winnie Mandela, Sam Nujoma, and Nthato Motlana.</p> <p>The Anti-Apartheid Activism grouping comprises three sub-groupings: Anti-Apartheid Solidarity; Conferences, Events, and Projects; and Boycotts and Divestment.</p> <p>The Anti-Apartheid Solidarity files highlight organizations that aligned themselves with the anti-apartheid movement, many of which were student-led.</p> <p>The Conferences, Events, and Projects files include initiatives and conferences that SAC members either attended, led, or were otherwise involved with.</p> <p>The Boycotts and Divesment files contains ephemera related to anti-apartheid boycotts such as the Shell boycott and cultural boycotts of American artists who performed in Apartheid-era South Africa. These files also highlight other corporate divestment efforts outside of South Africa, most notably the Polaroid Revolutionary Workers Movement in the United States.</p>"}
