Early membership consisted of both single family homeowners and co-op owners who were concerned about the changes in the neighborhood. The aim of the association is the preservation of the human scale, the improvement of Village parks, and the enjoyment of the amenities of Village life. Before the formation of block associations, the Association coordinated community projects such as tree planting and also worked to foster landmark preservation through education.</p>"}

The records include newsletters, clippings, minutes, member lists, fundraiser materials, petitions, and correspondence – mostly copies of outgoing letters to individual politicians as well as the city council. Topics covered include rezoning issues, recycling, public landmarks hearings, liquor licenses, above ground PATH vents, the new West Side Highway connection, lighting, the Jefferson Market Courthouse, taxes, rent controlled apartments, and panhandling and prostitution problems in the neighborhood. The Association also retained publications and pamphlets from the City and the Landmark Commission which pertained to their work and interests. Ten blueprints showing architectural detail and restoration plans for houses within the district are also included.</p>"}
