Born in 1932, she initially studied with her mother and grandmother, eventually studying composition at the University of Houston (1949-1952), San Francisco State College (1954-1956), and privately with Robert Erickson. She was codirector of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (1961-1965) and director when it became the Mills Tape Music Center (1966-1967). From 1967-1981 she taught at the University of California, San Diego. In 1981 she became consulting director of the Creative Music Foundation at West Hurley, New York. The Pauline Oliveros papers contains Oliveros' correspondence files through the year 2001."}
