{"value"=>"<p>Nathaniel Dickerson, singer, actor and teacher, was born June 17, 1914 in Waycross, Georgia. He died on May 10, 1999 in Stamford, Connecticut.</p> <p>Dickerson attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. While there he became a featured soloist with the University's Jubliee Singers. He also studied voice at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1945 he won the Marian Anderson scholarship.</p> <p>While in the Coast Guard, Dickerson and three other Officers were \"ordered to sing together\" becoming the officially named U. S. Coast Guard Quartet. The day after getting discharged, in 1945, they landed a spot on the Fred Allen Show, renaming themselves \"The Mariners.\" The group soon became regular guests on the Arthur Godfrey Show. The Mariners were one of the first racially integrated groups (Dickerson is African-American) to be seen on national television. The group stayed with the show until 1955. During this time, Dickerson did solo work in concert settings, as well as being a paid vocalist for local churches.</p> <p>In 1958, Dickerson began working as a registered representative on the New York Stock Exchange. He later worked for the Bergen County Urban League, where he helped coordinate field trips, interviews, and jobs between high school students and local businesses.</p> <p>Dickerson died in Stamford, Connecticut on May 10, 1999.</p> <p>Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Godfrey</p>"}
