{"value"=>"<p>Born in Haiti in 1903, Maurice Dartigue was trained as a rural education specialist at the Damien School of Agriculture in Port-au-Prince and at Columbia University's Teachers College in New York. He began his career as Administrator of Rural Schools in 1926 during the U.S. occupation of Haiti and was promoted Director of Rural Schools in 1931. He was appointed Minister of Education in the administration of President Elie Lescot in 1941, and went into exile after the latter's overthrow in 1946. Dartigue settled the same year in New York and began a new career at the United Nations as a senior specialist in education in the Trusteeship department. He joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1956, supervised the Major Latin American Project (LAMP) and other programs in Asia and the Arab states, and was appointed Chief of UNESCO's Africa Division in 1962. He directed several educational and teachers' training program in Africa until his retirement in 1968.</p>"}
