He was thirteen years old in 1854, when he began the diary, and he kept it on behalf of himself and his twin brother, Ames, at their home in New York City and country home in Craigville, New York. Entries describe their school work, drawing, music, sports, and other matters, as well as the social activities of their parents. The diary includes several references to Van Wart's great uncle, Washington Irving, mentioning his country home at Irvington, his 72nd birthday, and going to the opera with him"}
