He wrote books and articles on bibliography and a column, The Bibliographer, about rare books. Collection consists of correspondence relating to bibliography, personal and professional papers, and Sargent's autograph and facsimile collections. Correspondence, 1883-1930, is from readers of his column, bibliographical colleagues, and family members. Personal and business papers, ca. 1910s-1930, include lists and descriptions of books and manuscripts in libraries and private collections; typescripts of Sargent's essays on bibliographical topics and some poems; accounts, 1906-1922; notes; and printed matter. Autograph collection contains 18th through 20th century letters, signatures, and a few photographs and documents of a variety of prominent people. Facsimile collection consists of letters and documents of historical and literary figures."}

{"value"=>"<p>George Henry Sargent, bibliographer and journalist, was associated with the Boston Evening Transcript (now defunct) from 1895 until his death in 1931.</p> <p>Sargent was born in Warner, New Hampshire in 1867. In 1887 he left for St. Paul, Minnesota where he was on the staff of the <em render=\"underline\">St. Paul Daily Pioneer Press</em> first as a reporter, later as city editor. Sargent returned East in 1895, settled in Boston, and joined the <em render=\"underline\">Transcript</em> as a reporter. He began writing his Wednesday rare book column, \"The Bibliographer\", in 1903. Ill health necessitated Sargent's return to his family's farm in Warner in 1914. From there he continued \"The Bibliographer\", (his last column appeared on the day of his death), wrote books and articles, on bibliography, and maintained his own book collection. He was survived by his wife, Carrie F. Dietz Sargent.</p>"}

Some letters from family members are included. The correspondence consists of contributions and reactions to his column, discussions of rare book and manuscript sales, and other bibliographical news and information. Elmer Adler, George T. Goodspeed, Frederic W. Goudy, Mitchell Kennerley, Charles E. Lauriat Jr., H. L. Mencken, A. Edward Newton, A. S. W. Rosenbach, William Edwin Rudge, and George P. Winship are among the correspondents.</p></div></li><li><div class='series-title'><a href='/mss/2677#c1324878'>II. Vollbehr collections); typescripts of Sargent's essays on bibliographical topics, and some poems; accounts, 1906-1922 (some personal); notes, printed material, and clippings. Of note are manuscript lecture notes (or notes - taken by Sargent? - at a lecture) on early printing by George P. Autograph Collection</a></div>\n<div class='series-description'><p>Sargent's autograph collection contains eighteenth through twentieth century letters (a few of which are typescript copies or facsimiles), signatures, and a few photographs and documents of a variety of prominent people. Some of these were addressed to editors of the Transcript; a group are from sculptors and concern a statue of the nineteenth century lawyer and statesman John Parker Hale; and some are from authors to Charles Stuart Pratt and Ella Farman Pratt, editors of Wide Awake: An Illustrated Magazine for Boys and Girls. Also included are letters by Edward Bellamy, Childe Hassam, Andrew Lang, and George Ripley; a photograph of Geronimo; and a photostat of a manuscript of a poem, \"To One Departed\", by Edgar Allan Poe. Of note is the presence of autographs of a number of prominent women, including: Alice Stone Blackwell, Carrie Chapman Catt, Julia Ward Howe, and Sarah Orne Jewett.</p></div></li><li><div class='series-title'><a href='/mss/2677#c1324994'>IV.
