{"value"=>"<p>Charles Anthony Frye (1946-1994) was an early proponent of Black studies and taught philosophy, religion and literature, and he was a published novelist and poet. He received his Masters of Arts degree (1970) in African studies (religion and philosophy) from Howard University; in 1976, he was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Higher Education (curriculum development and administration). Frye taught at several universities, among them Howard University, Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, Prairie View A and M University in Texas, and Southern University at New Orleans. At Southern University, he developed, served as director, and helped to create a museum-worthy collection of African art at the Center for African and African American Studies. Frye published seven books including the highly regarded <span class=\"title\">Towards a Philosophy of Black Studies</span> (1979) and <span class=\"title\">From Egypt to Don Juan: The Anatomy of Black Philosophy</span> (1988); additionally, he wrote an unpublished manuscript, \"Peasant Ways of Knowing: Essays in African and African American Religion and Philosophy\". He was the founding editor of <span class=\"title\">The New England Journal of Black Studies</span>, served as editor of <span class=\"title\">Contributions in Black Studies</span>, <span class=\"title\">Enfield House Journal</span>, and the <span class=\"title\">Benjamin E. Mays Academy Monograph Series</span>.</p> <p>In addition to Frye's scholarly pursuits, he published a novel, <span class=\"title\">The Peter Pan Chronicles</span>, and two short stories. He also wrote a screenplay, \"Solina\", and a number of poems.</p> <p>Frye was a member of several professional organizations including the College Language Association and the National Council on Black Studies, presenting papers at their conferences and elsewhere. Among his awards were the Benjamin A. Mays Academy Scholars Award and the Ford Foundation Advance Study Fellowship. In 1993, he and his wife and literary agent, Claudia Menza, toured England, presenting a program of poetry and prose on their lives and the African American experience under the title, \"The Claudia and Charles Show\". In 1994, at age forty-eight, Frye died of lymphoma in New Orleans, leaving behind unfinished writings and other aspects of his productive and diverse career.</p>"}

Frye Papers, 1964-1995, reflect the teaching and writer career of this professor of African and African American philosophy, religion, and literature.</p> <p>The Personal series consists of resumes, obituaries, correspondence for his jobs searches (1976-1994), and a script for \"The Claudia and Charles Show\", the literary show that Frye and his wife Claudia presented in England in 1993. The Teaching career series contains primarily administrative material from the various colleges where he taught. Included are annual reports for the Center for African and African American Studies at Southern University at New Orleans; his appointments at the various colleges; student evaluations; proposals that he wrote; projects that he initiated; and his personal leave file. There is an extensive tenure and promotion file he prepared for Prairie View College (1985-1988), and appointment and reappointment material and syllabi for the University of Massachusetts. There is limited information about the Afro-American Studies Department at Howard University. Frye organized these files in reverse chronological order by name of college; this arrangement has been maintained. The Correspondence series includes correspondence with colleagues, among them Fela Sowande, one of his professors at Howard University. Correspondence dealing with conferences pertains to themes of multiculturalism, literature, Black studies curricula, and related subjects. The Institute of the Black World file contains conference papers by St. Clair Drake and James Turner. Correspondence with publishers discusses manuscripts that Frye submitted for publication, including his novel <span class=\"title\">The Peter Pan Chronicles</span>.</p> <p>The Writings series, 1964-1993, contains drafts and in some instances, photocopies and background materials for articles and other writing, most of which were published. Among other topics, he wrote about African and African American studies, Black philosophy, and aspects of his study of the Don Juan figure. Included are some of his college papers, Master's thesis and Ph.D. dissertation, academic books, <span class=\"title\">The Peter Pan Chronicles</span>, an unpublished screenplay, \"Solina,\" short stories, and poems. Manuscripts for his unpublished novel, \"A Good Night's Leap\", his unfinished study \"Peasant Ways of Knowing\", and papers presented at seminars and conferences also form part of this series.</p> <p>Additionally, there are files pertaining to Frye's consultancies and board membership, reference material including papers presented at conferences, and a number of articles by Fela Sowande.</p>"}
