{"value"=>"<p>Ezra Ayers Carman (1834-1909) was a Civil War veteran and recognized authority on the Battle of Antietam. He served on the Antietam Battlefield Board from 1894 to 1898 and in 1905 was appointed chairman of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commission. Carman also served as Chief Clerk in the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture from 1877 to 1885. His son, Dr. Louis D. Carman (1860-1936), was a medical examiner in the U.S. Pension Bureau from 1883 to 1933.</p> <p>Carman was also interested in the history and genealogy of his family. He was a member of the Carman Association and gave the keynote address at the 1881 Carman family reunion. At the time of his death, he was assembling material for a book on the Carman family.</p>"}

Materials on the Ayers family include an 1816 ancestral chart, a photograph of William Ayers, and a bound volume of E.A. Carman's notes on the Ayers family, including a register of births, deaths and marriages, copied from Woodbridge Town Book by William. A. Whitehead, with transcripts and extracts.</p> <p>Carman maintained files on the descendants of Benjamin Carman and John Carman as well as files on others sharing that surname. The files include his research correspondence, a business card of B. T. Carman, family trees and charts, genealogical notes, an 1881 photograph of E.A. Carman's relative and frequent correspondent, Charles H. Carman, and copies of family wills, such as those of Richard Carman, 1769, Samuel Carman, 1747, and Hugh Dunn, 1826.There is also a copy of a 1776 document: \"Damages by the British,\" and a 1916 paper by Dr. Byron S. Palmer, \"Carman Family Ancestry, Previous to Their Arrival in America.\"</p>"}
