Correspondence is related to his aspirations as an artist and poet, service in the Mexican War and the Civil War, and activities as Adjutant General of Maine. Prominent correspondents include Albert H. Tracy, John C. and Jessie B. Frémont, and Franklin Pierce. Diaries cover his service in the 10th Infantry, Camp Scott, Wyoming Territory, the Mormon expedition, official and social life in Washington, D.C. and Portland, Maine, and his participation in Frémont's campaigns in Missouri, Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley."}
