He was born in the U.S.S.R., educated at Leningrad State University, and became a lecturer at the Institute of Theater, Music and Cinema. He emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1975. He wrote articles about theater and dance for American periodicals and was the author of two books, <span class=\"title\">Baryshnikov:From Russia to the West,</span>1981, and <span class=\"title\">The Great Russian Dancers,</span>1984. He was working on a biography of Marius Petipa when he died.</p>"}
