By 1849 he was associated with Evans, Davis & Co., manufacturers and merchants of files, which became Davis, Evans & Dodge the following year (firm was also known as American File Works). Dodge operated its warehouse and retail outlet in New York City and he also served as president of a related firm, U.S. Car Spring Co. Collection contains financial records of Dodge's medical practice, household accounts and remembrances, 1849-1855, and business records of file and spring manufacturing companies with which he was associated. Medical practice records, 1829-1846, consist of ledger and day books. Bulk of business records, 1848-1862, concern file manufacuring company and include letterbooks, account books, day books, sales books, receipt books, ledgers, and other related materials. Business records also contain the financial records, 1850-1853, of the U.S. Car Spring Co. and some correspondence, 1853-1856."}

He was the third child of the merchant and peace activist David Low Dodge and Sarah Cleveland Dodge, and the older brother of the renowned businessman and philanthropist, William E. Dodge of the firm of Phelps, Dodge & Со. Dodge practiced as a physician in Fairfield, Connecticut from 1829-1830 and in Hartford from 1831-1846. By 1849 he had become associated with the firm of Evans, Davis & Со., manufacturers and merchants of files which became Davis, Evans & Dodge the following year. The firm was also known as the American File Works. Dodge operated its warehouse and retail outlet at 25 Cliff Street, New York City. He was also president of the U. S. Car Spring Company, a related firm with offices at the same address.</p>"}

The medical practice records consist of one ledger, 1829-1830, and eight day books, 1829-1846. The bulk of the business records concern the file manufacturing company known as Evans, Davis & Co., Davis, Evans & Dodge, and American File Works. These records include letter books, account books, daybooks, sales books, receipt books, ledgers and other financial records of the office/warehouse in New York City and the factory in Ramapo, New York, 1848-1862. These volumes include such details as the business' total assets, names of customers, price lists, wages paid to factory workers, rents paid by workers for lodgings, and quantities shipped from factory to warehouse. The remainder of the volumes contains the financial records of the U. S. Car Spring Company, 1850-1853. Dodge's correspondence as president of this company can be found in his letter book of 1853-1856 which was used for letters concerning both the American File Works and the U. S. Car Spring Company.</p> <p>Box at end of collection contains volumes 18, 19, and 31.</p>"}
