{"value"=>"David Bennett Hill (1843-1910), an American lawyer and politician, served as governor of New York from 1885 to 1891 and U.S. senator from 1891 to 1897. He was also president of the New York State Bar Association. Collection consists of correspondence, legal and political papers, writings and speeches, and photographs. Correspondence, 1886-1910, is with prominent citizens of New York and fellow politicians. Legal papers, ca. 1901-1907, include briefs, affidavits and legal opinions. Political papers contain campaign materials and executive orders from Hill's gubernatorial term and a few of his papers as a U.S. senator. Also, writings and speeches, 1892-1904, and photographs including portraits of Hill."}

{"value"=>"<p>David Bennett Hill was an American lawyer & politician. Born in Havana, New York on August 29, 1843. He was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was at one time Mayor of Elmira, New York. He was elected Lt. Governor in 1882. He took over the governorship of New York on the election of Grover Cleveland to the presidency of the U. S. In 1885 he was elected Governor and was re-elected in 1888. He was also president of the N. Y. State Bar Assn. (1886-1887). He was U. S. Senator (1891-1897). He ran again for Governor of New York in 1894 but was defeated. He died in Albany, New York on October 20, 1910.</p>"}
