{"value"=>"<p>\"Assemblywoman Geraldine L. Daniels was elected in 1990 to serve a sixth term representing the 70th Assembly District, located in Central Harlem. She was the first African-American women to hold this office. A native New Yorker, Daniels was born in East Harlem and earned degrees from Queens College and Malcolm–King Harlem College Extension. Assemblywoman Daniels was appointed Chairperson of the New York State Majority Democratic Conference. She was also a member of the Assembly Committees on Health, Higher Education, Labor, Mental Health and Housing; Vice Chair of the New York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus; and a Majority Assistant Floor Whip. As Assemblywoman, Daniels addressed the lack of nurses in the city by pressing the New York Counties Registered Nurses Association to re-establish Harlem Hospital School of Nursing. She was a delegate to various State and National Democratic Conventions from 1960 - 1984. Some of the notable legislation sponsored by the Assemblywoman includes Chapters/Pen Certificates; the renaming of the Harlem State Office Building to the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building; an increase in the amount of money earned by a person retired from State Government; an increase in Social Security Insurance for senior citizens; and Bundy Aid for Malcolm-King College. Ms. Daniels was the First Vice Chair of the Harlem Urban Development Corporation; a charter member and former Treasurer of the Council of Black Elected Democrats of New York State; Chairperson of the New York County Democratic Committee; and District Leader and Executive Member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Democratic Club in Central Harlem. She was a life member of the National NAACP; an Executive Committee Member of the New York Branch of the NAACP; and a Board Member of the New York Urban League, Manhattan Branch. Ms. Daniels was a member of the Negro Business and Professional Women's Club of New York and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; a member and former Board Member of 100 Black Women; and Past Daughter Ruler of I.B.P.O.E. of W. Eureka Temple 22A. She also served as Vice President of Inner City Broadcasting Corporation. Daniels became a member of the New York State Legislative Pilots Association (NYSLPA), incidentally becoming the first African-American women to join since its conception forty-seven years earlier. In 1989, she was named Assembly Person of the Year by the Forensic Association. An active communicant of St. Aloysius Church, Assemblywoman Daniels was married to late Eugene R. Primarily located in Harlem, these groups corresponded with Daniels's office and shared materials and information about their work. Of note in the collection are files relating to the Harlem Urban Development Corporation (HUDC), an entity designed to be instrumental in helping to build economic and social development of African-American and Latino peoples in Harlem and promote job growth and creation by both the private and public sector that would be more community controlled. The files consist of bylaws, information on committee members, financial records, meeting material, correspondence, and background information on HUDC.
