(FIA) was founded in 1955 as the Fire Island Voters Association, Inc. to advocate for, protect, and preserve the island in the interests of its homeowners, business owners, and visitors.</p> <p>The Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore was a grassroots group formed in the 1960s to protect the island's ecosystem from the Temporary State Commission on Protection and Preservation of the Atlantic Shore Front's plan to construct a highway on the island. The plan was spearheaded by American urban planner and public official Robert Moses.</p> <p>From 1960 to 1965, the FIA and the Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore successfully advocated against the construction of Moses's highway plan on Fire Island. The two organizations were also instrumental in advocating for and securing the creation of the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS), which protects the barrier island environment.</p>"}

Pike on the formation of the Fire Island National Seashore, as well as local newspaper clippings, press releases, brochures, and bulletins about Moses's highway plan and the formation of the Fire Island National Seashore. There is also a brochure about the formation of Cherry Grove Permanent Dunes, Inc. (another environmental advocacy organization) and a newsletter advocating against the highway plan from the president of the Point O'Woods Association (a homeowners association).</p> <p>Correspondence consists of letters about Moses's highway plan to and from Representative Otis G. Pike from FIA and citizens of Long Island and a letter from Governor Rockefeller's secretary. There are also letters from the Secretary of the Interior Stewart L.
