{"value"=>"<p>The United Nations (UN) Centre Against Apartheid was a unit within the UN Secretariat responsible for promoting awareness and action against the apartheid regime in South Africa. The unit was founded in 1963 as the Special Committee on the Policies of Apartheid of the Government of the Republic of South Africa. Subsequent forms of the name include the Special Committee Against Apartheid, and the Unit on Apartheid. In 1976, it became the UN Centre Against Apartheid. During its existence, it initiated or assisted public campaigns against apartheid, and organized conferences, seminars, hearings, and other events around the world. It also published hundreds of posters, audio materials, and documentary films.</p> <p>Indian national and UN civil servant E.S. (Enuga Sreenivasulu) Reddy (July 1, 1924 - November 1, 2020) served as principal secretary of the Special Committee Against Apartheid from 1963 to 1965, and later as director of the Centre Against Apartheid from 1976 to 1984.</p>"}
