{"value"=>"<p>After Danish control was established over Reval (modern-day Tallinn, Estonia) in 1219, King Valdemar II of Denmark founded the Bishopric of Reval in 1240. Initially under the authority of the Archbishop of Lund in Denmark (now part of Sweden), the diocese was transferred in 1374 to the Archbishopric of Riga (now in Latvia). The Bishopric of Reval was dissolved in 1560, largely due to the sweeping changes of the Protestant Reformation, which reshaped religious institutions across Northern Europe. During this time, Pope Sixtus IV (Francesco della Rovere, 1414–1484), who served as pope from 1471 to 1484, played a pivotal role in reinforcing the papacy's influence in Northern Europe. His pontificate was marked by intensified efforts to consolidate papal authority and strengthen Catholicism's hold across the continent. These strategies aligned with the ambitions of Christian I (1426–1481), King of Denmark, Norway, and briefly Sweden, who sought to solidify Catholic dominance within the Nordic region. With the support of Pope Sixtus IV, Christian I worked to strengthen the ties between the monarchy and the Church, further entrenching Catholic influence in the region during the Kalmar Union.</p>"}
