{"value"=>"<p>Musician and teacher Samuel Carroll Buchanan (1927-2010) received his PhD from New York University in 1987 with a dissertation on Black jubilee quartets in the United States titled, \"A Critical Analysis of Style in Four Black Jubilee Quartets in the United States.\" The quartets discussed in his dissertation are the Golden Gate Quartet, Norfolk Jubilee Quartet (also known as Norfolk Jazz and Jubilee Quartet), Selah Jubilee Singers, and Mitchell's Christian Singers. Jubilee quartets were popular African American religious musical groups in the first half of the twentieth century.</p> <p>Buchanan also sang with several groups including the Charioteers, the Carr-Hill Singers, and the Gulf Coast Community Choir. He taught music in the New York City public school system as well as at Five Towns College in Seaford, New York. Additionally, he worked as an administrator in the Peace Corps, serving in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. Buchanan died in December 2010.</p>"}

The collection also includes classes, discussions, research, music, and events related to Black jubilee quartets. Since the collection's original format is audio cassettes, many of the items contain two or more parts, one for each side of the cassette. Some items include multiple recordings and are described separately. Ruth ) around 1927 in Brooklyn, New York.
