{"value"=>"<p>Marilyn Clement (June 30, 1935 to August 3, 2009) was a civil rights activist from Tulia, Texas. Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and Ella Baker, she began her career as an organizer for racial and social justice in the 1960s with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).</p> <p>From 1968 to 1975, she was the associate director of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organizations (IFCO), an interdenominational civil rights nonprofit. From 1976 to 1989, Clement was the executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), where she co-developed a number of programs including the Ella Baker Legal Intern Program, the Mississippi Voting Rights Project, the Movement Support Network, and the National Anti-Klan Network, now known as the Center for Democratic Renewal. In the 1990s, Clement directed the US Section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), and helped organize the WILPF Peace Train to the UN's Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995. From 1999 to 2003, she worked with United Methodist Women, part of the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, to connect members in the US to international social justice movements. Clement continued to work with the Women's Division to build support for single payer health care in the US, and in 2003 she was instrumental in forming the Campaign for a National Health Program Now, now known as Healthcare-Now. Clement served as the organization's national coordinator until her death in 2009.</p>"}
