{"value"=>"<p>August Meier (April 30, 1923-March 19, 2003) was a white civil rights activist, a scholar of African American history, and the author of <span class=\"title\">Negro Thought in America, 1880-1915: Racial Ideologies in the Age of Booker T. Washington</span> (1963). Meier taught history at several historically Black colleges and universities including Tougaloo College (1945-1949), Fisk University (1953-1956), and Morgan State College, now Morgan State University (1957-1964). He was a professor of history at Kent State University from 1967 to 1993.</p> <p>Meier served as secretary of the Newark chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1951 to 1952, and from 1956 to 1957. He was a member of the Baltimore Chapter of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) (1960-1963), and of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) (1963-1964). While he was active in the civil rights movement, Meier's research became focused on the origins of nonviolent protest.</p>"}
